Tax Planning
Tax planning is about making sure clients are aware of the reliefs, allowances and tax efficiencies available to them, and that their affairs are arranged in a way that suits their circumstances.
The most effective planning tends to happen throughout the year, before decisions are made rather than after. We work with clients on an ongoing basis, reviewing their position as circumstances change and flagging anything worth considering in good time.
Areas we regularly advise on include the structure of remuneration for company directors, the timing of income and expenditure, pension contributions, the use of capital allowances, and the tax implications of significant business decisions. Every client’s situation is different, and the advice we give reflects that.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT)
Capital Gains Tax can arise in a number of situations — selling a property that is not a main residence, disposing of shares or investments, selling a business or its assets, or transferring assets in certain circumstances. The rates, reliefs, and exemptions that apply can vary considerably depending on what is being disposed of and the individual’s wider tax position.
Where a disposal is being considered, we help clients understand the likely tax implications in advance, so that decisions can be made with a clear picture of the position. Where reliefs are available — such as Business Asset Disposal Relief on the sale of a qualifying business — we ensure clients are aware of them and that any conditions are met well before the disposal takes place. The timing and structure of a transaction can sometimes make a material difference to the outcome.
Inheritance Tax (IHT)
Inheritance Tax is an area many people put off thinking about, often until options are more limited than they might have been. With the nil-rate band having been frozen for a number of years and asset values having risen considerably, more estates are coming into scope — including those of business owners who may not have given the matter much thought.
We help individuals and families understand their current IHT position and what options are available to them. This might involve making use of annual gifting allowances, reviewing how business or property assets are owned, or considering whether Business Property Relief or Agricultural Property Relief might apply. IHT planning works best when it is approached gradually and as part of a broader picture — early conversations are invariably more useful than late ones.
Where the situation calls for it, we work alongside solicitors and financial advisers to ensure clients receive coordinated, well-rounded advice.
